This is Lou Henry Hoover, former First Lady of the United States.
While Lou Hoover is probably most famous for being married to former US President, Herbert Hoover, she was a whip-smart, well-read, nerdy bad-ass in her own right.
Here’s the skinny on Lou.
Growing up, Lou planned on becoming a teacher as an adult, but after hearing a lecture on geology, she changed her mind and became one of the first women in the United States to get a college degree in geology.
That’s how she met Herbert Hoover- they were both geology students at Stanford.
In addition to loving geology, Lou also loved languages, and she spoke several. Lou and Herbert would frequently speak to each other in Mandarin Chinese, and for fun, they would translate archaic mining texts from Latin to English.
THAT’S WHAT SHE DID FOR FUN!
Oh, and in case you thought Lou’s pursuits were limited to books about mining, she also rode horses, and hunted.
So, while Herbert Hoover might have been one of our weaker Presidents, his wife was kind of nerdy and awesome.
